I found this picture the other day taken in August as the end of last year's wheat was about to be plowed under. The new wheat has started to grow and the cows have just been moved back on to the field and are hungrily eating away at it. It is still early and I am thinking what can I say that will be helpful today on providing focus and clarity no matter who or where you are? The thought that comes is the one I begin with every day before the sun rises. Time set specifically aside for me to think about what is valuable to me before the busyness of the day takes over and it all gets lost until the next morning. Seek freedom and become captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty.
The beauty of crisis as survival is we don't need to think about discipline, we just do what needs to be done or we die.
The rest of life isn't so simple. We desire the abstracts of freedom and liberty but what does it really mean to be disciplined to achieve them? Especially in a world where new rules seem to outpace our ability move forward? Distraction is the culprit of focus and focus is essential to discipline. Which brings us back to this here and now and what will you focus on today? Below is the scene from CITY SLICKERS where Jack Palance tells us all the secret to life. True or not it is still good advice even if you only can do it for one day. We can't all be cowboys and even though I live here with cows I still can't claim that title. But I do get simplicity. I do find focus. And I hold it all close with discipline as I rise every morning to think, pray, write, and question while the cows rise every morning to eat the wheat. What ONE THING can you focus on for today with just a bit of discipline? Comments are closed.
